Hard Times Music: That Hump by Erykah Badu

New Amerykah, Pt 1 (4th World War) is a very strong album. You have to pay a little bit of attention to it, but once you do you may find it to be a knock out.
- The relentless bass hits pushing this song forward remind me of the way life feels when life isn’t going so well. Each day just keeps coming. And coming. And coming. And coming.
- There’s something about the way Erykah sings this song - somewhere between hopeful and resigned, exhaustion and passion - that really captures the anxiousness that is the line between things getting a little bit better day by day and things getting a little bit worse.
- Hard times aside, the song is actually very beautifuly crafted. Badu’s vocals weave around the steady rhythm masterfully; dig the bassline and sublte but rad harmonies.
I just, I just want to fly away
I’m living check to check
I’m just trying to pay my rent
And I can feel it
Coming down around me
